Alexi’s Commentary
This is it, the first piece of my new and current era, my comeback era.
Naturally this was the opening piece of my comeback feature at Perth Poetry Club in July 2025.
So sit back, and enjoy the start of a new era.
CW: Abuse
You think you’ve met the love of your life
And then over time they become your life
Some may even destroy your life
But what has been destroyed
Isn’t even your life anymore
When you leave (if you do)
You’re hit with the grim reality
Not much is left of your old life
And you really start to wonder
Who you are anymore
Some exes can’t handle you
Others absorb all of who you are
Some will manipulate and abuse you
Then those that will try to kill you
And then there’s the one that’s all of the above
Years of bad exes and you’re with someone healthy and new
He brings up that he’s a poet
And you say so am I
And then it just hits you
In seven years you’ve written almost nothing new
Don’t get me wrong I’ve still been writing here and there
But not as close to like before
I haven’t even thought of performing
But I’ve now I know who I am
I’m a poet!
I’ve always preferred the term Spoken Word Artist
Or Slam Artist if competing of course
But the words have been coming back
And here I am once again writing nonstop
I’m a poet!
As it turns out I’m picking up where I left off
I’m going to open mics and seeking features
I’m going to finish my god damn zine
I’m going to compete in the national slam
I was and still am a fucking poet!
And this is my comeback!
